I have an option to move a house from Brisbane to the lake.
It has potential, but would be a lot of work too and maybe not exactly what I would 'design' myself.
It is circa 1915. Very high ceilings. Bullnose veranda (once the 1950s additions are removed along with the asbestos eeewwww) Three bedrooms, beautiful wide timber floor boards which are in good condition.
But do I really want the issues of house relocation? What I do know though, is that if I don't move this house it will be either demolished or moved by someone else. The demolishing makes me sad though.

ReplyDeleteOk, getting confused here... Only joking ;-). I have just re-read your blurb about this block and having 20 acres, if you can afford it - have both! Can this not be the guest house you have mentioned? You could live in it whilst your dream house was being built? hmmm something to think about for sure.....
ReplyDeleteMy partner and I have been in the house moving business for quite a while and have moved houses for ourselves too. I would like to expand on A-M's comment above. It CAN be cheaper than starting from scratch... but it can also be a trap for the inexperienced and end up costing Waaaaaayyyyyy more. There are lots of things to consider which I will expand on in a post on my blog very soon. But agree with you. It is a shame to let these wonderful homes get demolished as the beauty and character is something that modern homes just do not have.
ReplyDeleteSuch a decision. My parents moved a house from sydney to the blue mountains many years ago & then slowly renovated it over many years. It certainly worked out cheaper for them & they enjoy the whole renovating process so didnt mind doing the required work. Ah such a choice!!! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI know this is just my opinion, but I'd snap it up in a heartbeat! I'm with Jenny - could it work as guest accomodation? I'd love to move an old queenslander to my block, so if it were me there'd be no hesitation. Decisions,decisions! Good luck and let us know what you decide. K xx

ReplyDeleteI agree with Jenny too. If you can afford to make the church a lovely little guest house and a home to live in while your dream home is moved to site or built - then do it! Otherwise if you can't afford to do both then sell it to others who will love it too and move it to their dream block. What you simply cannot do is compromise on the layout of your dreamhome. You may not ever get the opportunity to have exactly as you want again, so do what you yearn to do and don't compromise on your big picture vision.
